What is Zakaat?
Zakaat is the third pillar of Islam, representing a mandatory charitable contribution for those who meet specific wealth criteria. Meaning “to purify” or “to cleanse,” it is intended to purify a person’s wealth and soul by redistributing surplus money to those in need.
To be obligated to pay Zakat, an individual must be an adult Muslim of sound mind who meets the following conditions:
Nisab: Your personal wealth must exceed a minimum threshold called the Nisab, typically based on the current market value of gold (87.48g) or silver (612.36g).
Hawl: You must have held this wealth for a full Islamic (lunar) year.
Ownership: You must have full possession and control over the assets.
